…Lost Board Demo This Saturday At Ponto In Carlsbad

Posted 06.02.2006

Saturday June 3rd at Ponto Beach.

Lost is having a demo of all the latest shapes from Lost. On hand will be a wide range of boards including all models and all the new constructions (XTR, Aviso, S-core) for anyone to try. There will be plenty of food, Lost Energy Drinks and other giveaways. We`ll be on the beach from 9am to 3pm so if you want to try out a new Lost - now is your chance. And if that’s not good enough, there’s a solid southern hemi showing up so you’ll have plenty of chances to put the boards to the test.

From the 5 freeway get off at La Costa Avenue and head west to highway 101. Make a right and look for the Lost tents on the south side of the jetties. Or you can stay home and have another boring weekend.

May 2006 issue

Welcome to the May 2006 issue of the Surfrider Foundation eNews USA, an email newsletter from the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit, coastal environmental organization at http://www.surfrider.org. The Surfrider Foundation National Office, with Jim Moriarty as Executive Director, produces the eNews. Zach Keenan, zkeenan@surfrider.org, is the editor. House Votes Against Removing Offshore Drilling Moratorium

The House of Representatives in Washington, DC voted on May 19 to keep in place the offshore oil and gas drilling moratorium that`s been in effect for the past 25 years. The drilling moratorium covers about 85% of federal coastal waters between 3 and 200 miles offshore. Surfrider Foundation strongly supports the offshore drilling moratorium, and favors all efforts to protect our beautiful coastlines from unsightly offshore drilling platforms. This is another important victory, not in improving coastal environmental protection, but in preventing a significant weakening of existing protections. Many thanks to these government officials for appreciating the importance of maintaining these restrictions.

NRDC to Sue EPA Over Inadequate Beach Water Quality Standards

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has officially announced its "intent to sue" the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the EPA`s failure to protect human health from waterborne disease. Specifically, NRDC points out that the EPA has missed its October 2005 Congressionally mandated deadline to revise and improve beach water quality standards. The EPA wants to extend the deadline to 2011. Current beach water quality monitoring, under EPA requirements, only tests for certain bacteria, ignoring viruses, toxins, and parasites. "The current standards focus on bacteria, because years ago we didn`t know as much about other disease-causing organisms," explained Dr. Joan Rose, director of Michigan State University`s Center for Water Sciences. "We now have methods that can detect viruses and parasites -- which can cause serious health problems -- but they`re not being used."

Los Angeles County Beaches Most Polluted in California

In an annual statewide beach survey released May 24 by Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay, five of the 10 most polluted beaches in California are in Los Angeles County. The survey found that contamination occurred at more beaches in Los Angeles County than previously thought, in part because bacterial samples are now being collected closer to storm drains and creeks, which is considered a better method for determining health risks to swimmers. The waterways flush motor oil, pesticides, trash and human and animal waste to sea. Health officials recommend that people avoid swimming within 100 yards of a flowing storm drain or for up to three days after a storm. Exposure to contaminated ocean water can increase the risk of stomach flu, ear infections, upper respiratory infections and skin rashes.

Some of the most polluted beaches include: Will Rogers State Beach; the Santa Monica Municipal Pier area; Cabrillo Beach on the harbor side at the lifeguard tower; Surfrider Beach in Malibu; Topanga State Beach; Avalon Beach on Catalina Island; Doheny Beach in Orange County; the Tijuana River mouth near San Diego; and Pillar Point Harbor beach at Capistrano Avenue in San Mateo County. But the most polluted beach in California is a stretch along northern Santa Monica Bay, including Escondido Beach, Puerco Beach, and Castle Rock Beach at the Castlerock and Santa Ynez storm drains near Pacific Palisades. Escondido Beach failed to meet water quality standards 95% of the time — the worst score for a California beach in nearly two decades.

Although urban runoff is the chief source of coastal pollution, leaky sewage pipes on Catalina Island and septic tanks in Malibu probably account for contamination at those beaches, said Mark Gold, executive director of Heal the Bay.

Pearl Jam Pitches In to Help Save Trestles

The Surfrider Foundation is pleased to announce that the Vitalogy Foundation will be donating $1 from every ticket sold for Pearl Jam’s upcoming Los Angeles shows to help with the Save Trestles campaign. Proceeds from the shows will go to assist the Surfrider Foundation in their efforts to stop a proposed toll road project that threatens both San Onofre State Beach and the world class surf break at Trestles. The donation will be made in memory of longtime band friend and Surfrider Foundation activist Dave “the Rapscallion” Russell, who lost his fight with a rare form of thyroid cancer on February 1st, 2006 at the age of 39. Dave was in the process of documenting the history of the Surfrider Foundation when the cancer was discovered. “Our planet and the ocean are currently under siege due to certain peoples overwhelming need to profit at our fragile environment’s expense. Dave Russell was a surfer and activist who worked tirelessly to defend against these threats, and it is in his name that we would like to offer our assistance to Surfrider Foundation and the California coast,” said Pearl Jam singer Ed Vedder. Pearl Jam will be performing at the LA Forum on July 9th and 10th. For more information on Pearl Jam or their upcoming tour check www.pearljam.com or to purchase tickets go to Ticketmaster. Coastal Factoid of the Month

10-20 New Species of Marine Life Discovered in Ocean Depths

In April, a consortium of 28 scientists from 14 countries took a 20-day voyage to survey the depths of the tropical Atlantic Ocean between the eastern US coastline and the mid-Atlantic ridge. "We found perhaps 10-20 new species of zooplankton," said Peter Wiebe, the cruise`s scientific leader and senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the United States. "This was a voyage of exploration ... the deepest parts of the oceans are hardly ever sampled," he continued, referring to the lightless depths of 1-5 km (0.6-3 miles) where the zooplankton were found. "By 2010, the research ... will provide a baseline against which future generations can measure changes to the zooplankton and their provinces, caused by pollution, over-fishing, climate change, and other shifting environmental conditions," said Ann Bucklin, lead scientist for the zooplankton census project at the University of Connecticut.

Results For The 2006 Local Motion Surf Into Summer Presented By O’Neill

Posted 06.01.2006

May 30th, 2006 – The 2006 Local Motion Surf Into Summer Contest, presented by O’Neill, wrapped up Memorial Day afternoon, leaving big smiles on the sun-burnt faces of the seventy eight finalists. Each one leaving the awards presentation with a trophy and a big sack of prizes containing hundreds of dollars worth of surf gear.

Oahu’s Sandy Beach provided three days of sunny weather, breezy trade winds and consistent waist to shoulder high surf for the annual event. The Surf Into Summer was moved to Sandy`s this year due to continuing water quality concerns at Ala Moana Bowls, which is the event’s usual location. Regardless of the last minute change, contestants and officials were stoked with the spectator-friendly environment and overall beach-vibe that Sandy Beach provided.

"I think Sandy’s is better for the spectators because the waves are so close," Local Motion Marketing Director, Mitch McEwen, said. "The waves might not be as good as Bowls, but we`re still really happy with the presence we had here by bringing something unique to this side of the island."

As Hawaii’s largest, most prestigious, amateur surf event, 220 surfers competed in 13 divisions of shortboard, longboard and bodyboard surfing. Brennan Boudreau of Makakilo won the 15 to 17 year-old junior Men division, one of the toughest divisions in the contest. Boudreau called this his biggest amateur win, as he beat out a long list of Hawai’i’s up-and-coming future pro surfers. In the highly competitive Boys division, thirteen-year old Keanu Asing, who won the menehune division last year, also proved his potential as a future pro.

"This is a pretty big win because this is the biggest contest of the summer, and it really helps me show everybody that I`m growing bigger and better,” Asing told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Fifteen-year-old Monica Byrne-Wickey of Hana, Maui, took first place in the girls division with a near-perfect score (9.7 out of 10) on one of her waves in the finals. Her 17.17 two-wave score put her far in front of sisters Lani Hunter(11.17) and Ashley Hunter (7.83), who followed behind to win 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Other division winners included: Travis Smith in junior men`s bodyboard (17-under); Mark Gervacio in men`s bodyboard (18-older); Koa Smith in menehune shortboard (11-under) ; Jensen Hassett in men`s shortboard (18-24); Keli Everett in masters shortboard (25-34); Andrew Coutts in senior men`s shortboard (35-over); Helena Suehiro in women`s shortboard (18-over); Genki Kino in men`s 30-under longboard; Gavin Hasegawa in men`s 31-over longboard; and Mimi Horiuchi in open women`s longboard
